1st Holy Communion

Children are prepared for first Holy Communion in a six-month process, usually beginning in October and leading to their first communion in Spring the following year.

This year (2008) we have 48 young candidates in our First Holy Communion Programme in Boxmoor, and consequently we have six groups meeting: three on Monday afternoon and three on Thursday afternoon from 4-5pm.

We start promptly at 4pm with a gathering prayer and brief description of the lesson of the day.  We then split into our groups for a small activity time where we usually make or decorate an item relevant to the course.

The groups then move to a more private area where we look at the next chapter of our course book 'I Belong'.  This book takes a close look at the Mass and its relevance to our lives today in a simple and enjoyable way: we start at the beginning of Mass with how we welcome people and our last chapter finishes with 'go out and serve the Lord'.

Most of our sessions are in the Parish Centre, but three are in the Church itself.  These are Baptism, where we go through the sacrament of Baptism, Getting to know our Church - a guided tour of the church and, finally, before Easter we have a children's Stations of the Cross.  At the end of each session we gather together for a closing prayer and, usually, a hymn.

We hope to give the children an enjoyable experience of sharing our Faith together whilst preparing them for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion.
