1st Holy Communion

Preparation of our children for First Holy Communion starts in October 2010,  leading to the celebration of Reconciliation in November and then their First Communion in May 2011.  We follow the programme  ‘I BELONG’ which takes us on a journey through the Mass gently exploring our own lives and how we can bring the message of the Gospels into life.  The programme is designed for the sessions to be fun for the children, with activities and time to talk in small groups with each other and the Catechist leading the group.  Each session should be followed up at home, there is always something to finish or a fun quiz to do, and all the family can help!

This year (2010/2011) we have 45 young candidates in our First Holy Communion programme in Boxmoor and consequently we have two groups meeting: on Monday or Thursday afternoon 4-5pm in the Parish Centre or in the Church.

We start promptly at 4pm with a gathering prayer and a brief look at the lesson of the day.  We then split into our small groups for our activity time where we usually make or decorate an item to take home or use in a larger display.  The groups then move to a more private area where we can look and discuss the lesson of the day.  Our session finishes with us gathering together again as a large group finishing with questions and answers, any notices, prayers and a hymn. 

Most of our sessions are in the Parish Centre, but two are in the Church itself.  These are ‘Getting to know our Church’ which is a guided tour of the church and everything in it, we also include the sacrament of Baptism in this session.  The next time we are in Church is just before Easter when we have a children’s Stations of the Cross.

We hope that with the example of family and parish we can give the children an enjoyable experience of sharing our Faith together whilst preparing them for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion.

There will be three First Holy Communion Masses:

Sunday, 15th May 2011 at 2.00 p.m.

Saturday, 21st May 2011 at 2.00 p.m.

Sunday 22nd May 2011 at 2.00 p.m.

Parish celebration – 12th June 2011 at the 11.30 a.m. Mass followed by a party
